On Saturday, local police and the Blue Light organisation held a Kids Gone Fishing day at Mt Cook Alpine Salmon on the Tekapo-Pukaki canal.

More than 200 young anglers turned out for the day, said Senior Constable Stu Mori, who helped to organise the event.

"We were quite blown away by the response," he said.

While the weather wasn't ideal, with a strong wind making it difficult for the fishermen, Mr Mori said one young angler managed to reel in a 2.5-kilogram salmon to take the top prize of a $100 Rebel Sport gift voucher.

Celebrity guests speed-skating star Nicole Begg and former All Black and current Crusaders hooker Corey Flynn were also a big hit, he said, signing autographs and posing for photos.

Mr Mori said organisers hoped to make some improvements to the event and hold it again next year.
