Someone has snatched a horse's head and the Caroline Bay Association wants it back.
The merry-go-round on the Bay has been targeted by vandals who have attacked the 130-year-old carousel and taken the head.
Caroline Bay Association president Kevin Ancell discovered the mess last night. He says it must have happened at the weekend.
"The head is irreplaceable; the whole horse will have to go."
The head appears to have been snapped off at the neck. The horses on the carousel are not insured for replacement.
"I wouldn't like to think what it is going to cost," Mr Ancell said.
The association had just finished painting the horses in preparation for the coming carnival.
Mr Ancell says a specialist would be needed to carve a horse's head to match the stolen one.
"There aren't any of them in Timaru; fibreglass is an option but it's not the same."
