Timaru police have recovered a wooden horse's head stolen from the 130-year-old Caroline Bay carousel.

Police found the head at a residence after receiving a tip about its whereabouts. The suspect, who lives at the residence, had not been spoken to as of 9am today.

Caroline Bay Association president Kevin Ancell discovered the vandalism of the merry-go-round on Monday. The head had been snapped off at the horse's neck, apparently sometime over the weekend.

The association had just finished painting the horses in preparation for the coming carnival.
