Police are asking for the public's help after a woman reported being shot at while walking her dog along the beach at Normanby.
The woman, who was not injured, told police she was walking near the end of Ellis Rd at about 8.20am when she heard a gunshot and felt a projectile whiz past her head.
She saw a man get into a blue car and drive away. The man had been standing near a small pond on the north side of Ellis Rd, police said.
Investigators found a shell casing at the scene near the area where the man was seen.
Police said the woman could not identify the man.
People occasionally use the area for shooting, police said, but not typically from the spot where the man was reportedly standing.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Timaru police on 03 687 9808.
