It's been a long time since June Leslie played for New Zealand. Now, at 85, she is delighted to hear of Cass Reid's success.
Leslie played for the New Zealand hockey team in 1953.
A forward, she was selected after playing a final pool game for South Canterbury, then for the South Island against the North, and a trial game - all on the same day - at the national tournament in Gore.
Their 16-game tour of England, Scotland and the Netherlands took six weeks, the same amount of time it took for each of the journeys there and back by ship.
Three years earlier she had self-funded her way to South Africa as part of an "International Wanderers" side that played in a tournament against South Africa, Ireland, England and the United States.
Leslie's mother, Myrtle Pearce, also played for New Zealand, but she did as a Canterbury representative.
