A day trip to Timaru ended badly for an Ashburton family at the weekend.
The family of six - two parents and four children - were initially stopped by staff at a Timaru retail outlet on Saturday afternoon.
The mother, a 26-year-old, was warned for shoplifting.
Police then searched the couple's vehicle under the Search and Surveillance Act and found 19 paua in the boot - 18 of them undersized.
The father, a 31-year-old, was arrested and charged under the Fisheries Act. His dive gear was seized and the matter was referred to the Primary Industries Ministry.
