Bridge to get full repairs
The Climie Tce walk bridge, in Timaru, will be repaired - as quickly as possible.
The 10-metre bridge that provides access to Climie Tce and Moore St, as well as forming part of the Timaru coastal walkway, was closed after some of its foundations were undermined by erosion.
The existing bridge had been built over an earlier model, and an engineer's survey confirmed it was unfit to use.
However, Timaru district councillors felt that the bridge provided too important a link for it to stay closed indefinitely. Options for the bridge ranged from it being closed permanently or removed, through to repairs allowing restricted pedestrian access at a cost of $40,000 or spending $60,000 to repair the bridge for unrestricted use.
Councillors at this week's district services committee meeting opted to fully strengthen and repair the bridge, which should add at least 30 years to its life.
While the work will not need to wait until the next financial year, district services manager Ashley Harper said the repairs could not be completed before the summer holidays, though he would talk to the engineers to see if some work could be done to allow temporary restricted use of the bridge.
