Carpark serves as training ground
Crew tests themselves against building
Firefighters found a new use for the Farmers carpark building this morning, turning it into a training site.
Timaru senior station officer Kevin Donaldson said a crew of four carried out a skills drill involving extending a ladder against the side of the building from various points.
Crews regularly did drills to maintain their skills but often did them at times and places when they were not so visible to the public, Mr Donaldson said.
While drills were done at the fire station's tower, they also liked to test themselves at other locations - down quiet alleyways or streets - to practise in different conditions.
It was the first time he had participated in a drill at the carpark.
Another crew from Washdyke had been at Redruth practising cut-outs from cars this morning, he said.
