Light circuit says thanks
Thanks for listening was the message from Fitness Studio members to the Timaru District Council yesterday when members of the light circuit class turned up at a public forum.
"There must have been times when the mayor and [community services manager] Ms [Sharon] Matson regretted we [mainly retired, light circuit users] had the time, skills and tenacity to stick to an issue and it was heartening the council listened," Margaret Dockrill told councillors.
Membership of the gym at the SBS Events Centre has been falling since the council's new gym opened at CBay in late July. Last month the council decided to close the gym at the end of January, but would make the facility available to community groups and schools to hire.
Members of the twice-weekly light circuit group had been vocal in wanting the gym to remain open as it suited their exercise needs as well as providing members with important social contact.
At this stage 47 people had indicated they wanted to keep using the gym, with probably 20 being interested in attending the hour-long light circuit sessions, Mrs Dockrill said. The rest would use the facility if suitable hours were arranged.
