Shearing time for alpacas
An annual shearing day has provided some relief from the heat for alpacas in Waimate.
Otaio Bridge Alpacas farm owners Ineke and Jacob Van Neuron held their annual event at the weekend.
Friends and customers also brought their alpacas to be shorn at the event.
Mr Van Neuron said some of the alpacas spotted a gate that was not quite secure and made a dash for it.
"We are lucky our shearer is not just a good shearer but a very fast sprinter.
"All were herded back safely to the shearing shed, and all were shorn."
Fleeces weigh from 6 kilograms on the males to 1.5kg on the weaners.
Some of the fleeces from the alpacas will be made into yarn, some will be sold to hand spinners and felters and some will be made into rugs.
