State Highway 1 near Morven will reopen in stages following a crash that closed the road early this morning.

One lane of the highway will likely be reopened by 12.30pm, while both lanes are expected to be cleared by 1.30pm, according to the police communications centre in Christchurch.

The highway was closed shortly after 6am this morning after a truck and trailer hauling toilet paper and beer overturned, blocking both lanes. The truck knocked down several power poles that landed on the highway.

Traffic was detoured around the crash site via Barnetts, Stokes and Crowes roads.

Two occupants of the truck suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital. No other vehicles were involved.

Officials brought in a crane to set the truck and trailer upright and to move the downed poles.
