LOTS OF SUPPORT: Geraldine Lionesses president Judy Stevens sorts presents under the Geraldine Community Resource Centre's Christmas tree.

Generous donations of money and gifts are pouring into the Geraldine Community Resource Centre to benefit people in need this Christmas.

Sue Sullivan launched the project five years ago to assist deserving residents and it has been a growing success ever since.

Gifts donated to the cause are placed under a Christmas tree at the resource centre and will be distributed throughout the town in time for Christmas Day.

People are nominated to receive the gifts, particularly those who are finding this time of year tough financially.

Centre administrator Donna Auld said the response each year was overwhelming and this year was no exception.

Three groups have dug deep for the cause this year, with The Geraldine Lionesses donating $400, the Lions Club of Geraldine donating $400 and the Geraldine District Golf Club giving $284, which it raised at a tournament last Saturday.

"The support is really humbling," Mrs Auld said. "A lot of families here are turning it into a tradition and come in with their children and put the presents under the tree. It's become a whole community thing."

Mrs Auld said the concept was a type of "secret Santa", with many people not knowing who they were nominated by. Some of those families will also receive food parcels.

She said recipients came from a range of backgrounds - some had had hardship throughout the year, while others had been struggling financially over a shorter period.

Nominations can be made by providing staff at the resource centre with the recipient's address, before December 20.
