South Canterbury Highland Pipe Band drummer Alexis Ferguson knows what time it is. In fact her timing is technically perfect.
She has taken top spot at the national solo drumming championships in Palmerston North for the second year running.
Ms Ferguson has been playing for 20 years and moved to Timaru several years ago after responding to an advertisement calling for a drum teacher in Timaru.
Originally from Clyde in Scotland, she now teaches drum all around New Zealand.
''It's not really all that difficult,'' she says of drumming.
''The thing that distinguishes people is practice; I drum every day in one description or another. It's like practising any instrument; you need to keep your hands going. I meet such a huge range of people all the time and from all walks of life through drumming.''
