The crash of a truck carrying beer and toilet paper drew much online attention last week - as did a report on the death of a rider taking part in a motorcycle race at Timaru International Motor Raceway.

1. Truck crash closes highway

A truck and trailer unit hauling beer and toilet paper had to be lifted by a crane after it overturned on State Highway 1 near Morven. A detour was in place for more than six hours as the scene was cleared.

2. Rider killed in freak crash

Ashburton motorcyclist Craig Hyde, 46, was tragically killed in a freak accident at the Timaru International Motor Raceway on Saturday while he was taking part in a Classic Action Motorcycle Sport (CAMS) event.

3. Crash north of Makikihi

We were alerted to the sound of sirens heading south early on Wednesday. The car crash near Makikihi turned out less serious than initially thought and emergency personnel were able to leave the scene shortly after arriving.

4. Youth worker to leave job

Youth Alley worker Josh South was quick to point out he had not resigned from his position as a Youth Alley but was taking a job with Community and Public Health in January promoting health in schools. His Timaru District Council youth worker position has been disestablished after Ministry of Social Development funding was reallocated.

5. Death in caravan caused by gas

Coroner Richard McElrea said there were "clear safety messages" to be taken from the death of Ian Philip Joyce, 82, who died of carbon monoxide poisoning in his caravan in 2010.
