Big changes on way for former tea rooms
Curry is coming to Waimate.
The former Savoy Tea Rooms are set to undergo a huge makeover when they are transformed into an Indian restaurant early next year.
New owner Abdul Khan already operates an Indian restaurant in the North Island and operated a curry house in Christchurch before the earthquakes.
He says Red Chillies will serve a selection of Indian cuisine and he reckons Waimate is ready for the spicy taste.
"I think Waimate could do with a taste of Indian food. I want to bring good food to Waimate," Mr Khan said.
The building is 108 years old and used to hold wedding breakfasts, 21st birthday parties and special functions.
It was a longtime landmark in Waimate and closed earlier this year.
Timaru District Council environmental officer Jonathan Cowie said he had been in conversation with Mr Khan and was awaiting a call from him to confirm a pre-opening inspection.
