Candles ready for carol singing
They have come, all ye faithful, and celebrated Christmas for more than 45 years.
Timaru South Rotary Club's annual Carols by Candlelight will be held on Sunday at the Theatre Royal.
It is the 46th time the club has organised the event and they have not missed a year, although a particularly bad run of wet weather in the 1990s meant a series of transfers for the carols from the Timaru Botanic Gardens to the Sacred Heart Basilica, and finally, the decision for it to be held indoors at the Theatre Royal.
The event is a money-spinner for local charities - each year the club chooses a charity that will benefit from the gold coin donation, and with between $1000 and $2000 raised on the night, it is a welcome boost to funds.
This year's charity is Timaru's Salvation Army.
In addition to the usual entertainment, Sheryl Higgs and Alistair Bradley as Double Talk will do the warm-up.
Timaru's Glee Club led by Bailey Dunnage will perform, as well as Zoe Scott of Geraldine, the Dutch Nightingale Choir and Laura Bunting.
Alpine Brass will be assisted by the Salvation Army band and the Ryth-Mix singers will back the carols.
The show kicks off at 7pm.
