A restricted fire season is in place over a large part of South Canterbury.
South Canterbury Rural Fire said yesterday the restrictions applied west from the Rangitata River up Boundary Stream to Coal Hill, following the district council boundary to Mt Musgrove along the top of the Two Thumbs, Rollesby, Dalgety Ranges, Hunter Hills to Mt Blyth, and Campbell Hills to Station Peak to the Waitaki River. A 365-day restricted fire season exists within one kilometre of both Waimate and Geraldine Forest areas.
Principal rural fire officer Rob Hands reminded people that it was an offence to light any fires in the open air unless a permit has been obtained.
Barbecues lit in properly constructed containers and fuelled with gas, solid or liquid fuel, and cooking fires at camping sites lit within a one-metre concrete or stone surround are exempt.
