INFRINGEMENTS: Boaties at the Waitaki lakes face penalties if they fail to pay a fee.

Boaties are being reminded to pay their fees at the Waitaki lakes this summer.

It is the second year fees are being charged after the Waitaki District Council set rates at $50 for a season pass and $5 for a day pass in June 2011.

Waitaki lakes camp supervisor Simon Fox says fees are applicable in the Waitaki lakes at the following places: Sailors Cutting, Parsons Rock, Boat Harbour and Lochlaird.

He said boat ramp notices are at the jetties in the information boxes, and pay and display envelopes are available.

Penalties can apply for non-compliance, he said.

"Camp supervisors will be monitoring for non-compliance, but we want people to enjoy their stay and experience at the Waitaki lakes."

Meanwhile, duck itch has been reported in the Lochlaird swimming area, which authorities are monitoring. Notices will be displayed.

Mr Fox says boaties need to be aware the Lochlaird camping area river braid on Aviemore adjacent to the camp has been closed to powercraft.

"This is now a passive swimming and kayaking area; it has been buoyed off at each end, with signage.

"This was done to avoid an accident as children swim there and play; it makes sense to have a safe area for the families that camp at the Loch.

He reminded caravan owners to lock up their gear when they go home and jot down the number of any suspicious vehicles.

Open fires are not permitted in camping areas.
