An 85-year-old Timaru man crashed an SUV head-on into a tree on Glen St shortly before 11am on Monday.
Police said the driver had been distracted when he ran off the road, but did not say why.
The man was the only person in the vehicle. He got out of the vehicle with some assistance and was taken to Timaru Hospital by ambulance.
He did not appear to be seriously injured.The SUV was travelling south and downhill when the crash occurred in front of a Glen St residence.
Neighbour Damien Stott, who stood watching across the street, said he had been alerted to the crash when he heard a loud bang.
Firefighters disconnected the vehicle's battery to prevent it from catching fire, Timaru senior station officer Garry Parker said.
The street was briefly dhclosed while the vehicle was winched on to a flatbed truck before being hauled away.
