Timaru man Francis Farmer can let the giant stick insect walk across his face - but its discovery gave his partner a surprise.

Penny Bradford got the surprise while gardening around her climbing roses when she reached out to trim this long piece of "pea straw" with clippers - and it moved.

The "straw" was actually a 22-centimetre-long stick insect, the first Ms Bradford has seen at her Arowhenua Rd home, where she has lived for about 11 years.

"We've got him in the washing basket, it's the only thing big enough to hold him," she said yesterday.
