Overdue trampers found

Two missing trampers have been found safe in the South Temple Basin.

A helicopter search for the pair, a 40-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman, started an hour ago.

The alarm was raised when the couple's friends reported them overdue. They were expected to return on December 30. Their vehicle had been located in the South Temple carpark.

Mid-South Canterbury area commander Inspector Dave Gaskin said about 10 tramping parties had been reported overdue this week due to the weather.

All had been accounted for except this couple.

He was unsure whether the rescued trampers had been unaware of the weather warnings or ignored them.
