Stormy weather on Timaru's horizon

23:19, Jan 15 2013

Prepare for some wild weather later today: the MetService predicting thunderstorms, heavy rain, hail and possibly even a small tornado for South Canterbury.

It's all being blamed on the wind convergences expected to occur over the South Island later today, according to MetService's meteorologist Daniel Corbett.

Onshore winds are expected to set up wind convergences from Marlborough through Canterbury and Eastern Otago to Southland this afternoon.

That will lead to cooler temperatures and a high risk of afternoon and evening thunderstorms in Eastern Otago and South Canterbury.

As well as localised heavy rain of 15 to 25mm an hour, expect hail in the 10 to 20mm range, and possibly even a small tornado.
