With the start of the school term looming in the not-too-distant future, South Canterbury kids should make the most of this week's summer weather.

Kiwa Nolan and Ashley Reihana did just that yesterday, enjoying the sun on the Opihi River as they floated along on a tyre tube in the current.

Temperatures peaked in the mid-20s in the afternoon, but hotter days are on the horizon.

The MetService forecast predicted a return to the heat by mid-week, with Wednesday's high expected to reach about 30C.

Today, tomorrow and Wednesday are all expected to be fine days with some scattered cloud and light winds.

Temperatures at the beginning of the week will likely reach the low-to-mid 20s.
