Kayakers' tumble prompts river warning

A search and rescue mission was about be mounted for two kayakers missing in the Rangitata Gorge when they walked out on Saturday night.

The two men, both 22, had set off at the top of the gorge at 6pm on Saturday and found their way out at 11pm.

Sergeant Graham Sharp, of Temuka, said the pair had failed to rendezvous with friends and the alarm was raised. They had difficulty with some rapids and had tipped out of their kayaks.

Mr Sharp said the river through the gorge was a grade 5 category and unless people had significant experience it was not wise to attempt it.
