Pipes are drug-free
Illegal drug manufacturing does not appear to have affected Timaru's wastewater treatment system.
Eighteen plants across the country are experiencing problems caused by P lab chemicals, but the Timaru district's systems had not been affected, district services manager Ashley Harper said.
When poured down drains, chemicals from P labs degrade pipes and kill the bacteria in waste treatment plants.
Mr Harper said there were no plans to install equipment to detect such chemicals in the council's new $15 million wastewater treatment plant which is still under construction.
