Hinemoa Ironside is happy to be one of the boys.

She was the second top student for Aoraki Polytechnic's engineering certificate last year and has gone on to gain an apprenticeship in Winchester at Ag Rural, formerly Anderson and Rooney. The 19-year-old originally got into engineering playing around in the workshop of her boyfriend, who is also an apprentice engineer.

"He introduced me to his gear and I really enjoyed it. He is in his second year as an apprentice. I enjoy making something useful while being creative at the same time."

She estimates it will take her three years to do her apprenticeship.

"I am stoked I have got a job, the people I work with are nice too."

Originally from Christchurch, Ironside was home-schooled before completing NCEA through correspondence school.
