Five injured in Burkes Pass crash

CHARGES LAID: Five Australian tourists were injured yesterday when their campervan crashed into a creek in the Mackenzie District.

Five people were injured when a campervan ran off State Highway 8 at Burkes pass and crashed into a stream yesterday.

The campervan was carrying six Australian tourists, five women and one man, Tekapo police said.

It crashed near Paddys Market Bridge shortly after 5pm.

Two of the occupants suffered spinal injuries and were flown by Westpac helicopter to Christchurch Hospital. Three others were taken to Timaru Hospital by St John Ambulance. The Fairlie fire brigade assisted at the scene.

Tekapo police said charges were likely to be laid this week in connection with the crash.
