Pair rescued from Hopkins River
A hunting expedition turned into a daring rescue mission for a couple after their 4WD became stuck in the Hopkins River.
The husband and wife pair were crossing the river in the Mackenzie District on Sunday night, between Monument Hut and Red Hut, when their 2009 Toyota Hilux got stuck mid-stream.
They set off their personal locator beacon at 9pm.
Four members of the Mt Cook Search and Rescue team and a helicopter were sent to the area to winch the couple to safety.
Twizel constable Joe Rush said the man, 43, and woman, 36, were well equipped so pitched a tent on the side of the river for the rest of the night.
Rescuers returned to them in the morning to help lift their vehicle from the river using a specialist 4WD-winching vehicle. However, Mr Rush said the Toyota had seen better days.
