Today is the 11th Go By Bike Day to encourage people to cycle instead of taking the car.

South Canterbury Bikewise co-ordinator Stacey Day not only was cycling good for health but it was good for the environment too.

She said more than 10 schools and kindergartens pupils chose to cycle to and from their classes today and a number of people travelled to work by bike.

Last year 54,000 people took part around the country.
