Early send off for charity cyclists
The 2013 Central South Island Charity Bike Ride got underway this morning with the help of Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae.
The three-day cycling event departs from Timaru and travels a 369km loop through Kurow, Omarama, Twizel, Tekapo and Fairlie.
The annual event began in 2005 and has since raised a total of $800,000 for South Canterbury charities.
Sir Jerry is on a four-day tour of South Canterbury and North Otago with his wife, Janine, Lady Mateparae, followed on from his time at the New Zealand Rowing Championships at Lake Ruataniwha. He was welcomed at Arowhenua Marae and visited the South Pacific Sera bioscience facility and Te Ana Ngai Tahu Rock Art Visitor Centre.
Today Sir Jerry was also expected to visit NZ Light Leathers, while Lady Mateparae hosts a morning tea to celebrate local women in the community.
