It was a buyers' market at the Tekapo lamb sale yesterday with prices for young merino stock well back on last year.

The 18,000 lambs on offer at the annual sale were back $40-$60, which was disappointing, livestock agent Peter Walsh of Peter Walsh and Associates said.

Many of the medium grade lambs sold for $40 yesterday. In 2012, those same lambs would have made $100.

Those medium lambs were the hardest to sell because of a lack of buyer interest, he said. "It reflects the market, it reflects the confidence in the industry at the moment."

Streamlands Station owner Phil Mackay said the prices received for his wether and ewe lambs were disappointing after last year's buoyant market.

"It's a bit sad after last year."

Another vendor said she was "quite happy" with the prices she received, but wished they were a little higher to reflect the quality of the stock she sold.

Farmers in the Mackenzie have had a great season and it showed in the quality of lambs on offer, Andrew Simpson, of Balmoral Station, said.

"It's just a shame the prices didn't reflect the quality of stock."

The top price at the sale was a pen of wether lambs from Maryburn Station that sold for $80.

Earlier in the day, the Omarama saleyards had their largest yarding of merino lambs in about five years.

The top end of the 18,000 sized yarding sold to a firm market with the top price at the sale going to Berwen Run for a pen of half-bred ewe lambs that sold for $97.

PGG Wrightson agent Mark Yeates said prices at the sale were about $40 back on last year.

"The smaller, younger lambs were difficult to sell. For the top two thirds, the market could be described as firm."

The fall in lamb prices meant confidence was down in the industry and this was reflected in the prices, he said.

The bulk of the purchasers were local, as well as some from Marlborough, North Canterbury and further south.
