High levels of faecal bacteria have been found in the Waihao River.
Community and Public Health has issued a warning after the bacteria were detected in the river, at Don's swimming hole, near Waimate, yesterday.
Canterbury medical officer of health Dr Daniel Williams said the water may contain a range of disease-causing micro-organisms like viruses, bacteria and protozoa.
Water quality at affected sites was not suitable for recreational uses because of the risk to health from the bacteria and other pathogens. Eating shellfish from the site should also be avoided.
