A man, under the influence of alcohol, borrowed a car and drove through two properties before crashing into a tree, the Timaru District Court was told yesterday.

Barry Charles Cliffton Foster, 69, of Timaru, was one of 10 people appearing yesterday on a charge of drink- driving.

Police said that at 5.45pm on January 9, Foster was in an associate's car on the associate's driveway in Wellington St.

Foster had been drinking and intended driving to his Harper St address.

He started the vehicle, drove through a corrugated iron fence at the rear of the property and continued through the adjacent vacant section into Napier St.

He drove 250 metres before failing to take a bend and crashing into a tree. He attempted to walk home but collapsed on the road.

He was taken to Timaru Hospital and a blood specimen showed 219mg of alcohol per litre of blood.

Foster told police he had gone to friends and drunk a bottle of vodka.

Judge Joanna Maze convicted and remanded him on bail to April 9 for sentencing.
