Celebrity chef to mix exotic tastes with fun
Master Chef finalist Jax Hamilton is kicking off her year of cooking demonstrations in Geraldine this week.
The former Timaru woman will add celebrity status to the Geraldine District Golf Club's Food Expo on Sunday.
She will do two cooking demonstrations - one at 11am and the other at 1pm.
And, the experience is one she is looking forward to.
"This is my first cooking demo of 2013, so connecting with the crowd's energy, which I love [is something I'm looking forward to]."
Ms Hamilton, who resides in Christchurch, lived in Timaru for "a short time" so is familiar with what the district's small towns have to offer.
She remembers Geraldine well.
"It reminds me of the little country village in Darling Buds of May - picturesque, quaint and historical."
Her upcoming visit will focus on "cooking for the locals", making a connection with them, while also sharing some of her inspirational tips. However, she said the most important factor was to have fun.
At 11am Ms Hamilton will make a Jamaican jerk chicken dish, with coconut rice and mango salsa. She will host another demonstration at 1pm with her recipe for chermoula spiced lamb chops on Moroccan cous cous.
The expo, taking place at the club rooms on Orari Back Rd from 10am to 4pm on Sunday, will be attended by at least another 13 stall holders.
Club catering convener Jan Oliver came up with the idea after realising the kitchen was "in desperate need" of a makeover.
Her suggestion for a fundraiser was welcomed by other club members and planning for the big day is almost complete.
"I thought ‘what can we do to make a good amount of money to go towards it'," she said, late last month.
She said preparations were going well, but ticket sales were slow.
The group is confident the event will be a success, especially if the weather plays its part. Organisers are hoping to raise $10,000 from the event.
