How much our elected members get

South Canterbury doesn't look like it gets any change out of $1 million when paying its elected representatives.

With councils and health boards just re-elected, and meetings under way, the bills for the cost of democracy will begin rolling in.

And salaries are just part of the figure – mileage and meeting fees also contribute to the cost.

The Timaru District Council's remuneration pool totals $411,432, but that doesn't include mileage, half the cost of community board member salaries, or resource consent hearing meeting fees.

Mayor Janie Annear receives a salary of $79,193, and a mayoral car is provided, with a deduction made from her salary for private use. The mayor doesn't receive meeting fees.

The meeting fee is set at $110, and calculations are based on 35 meeting fees being paid to each councillor in the course of a year.

The deputy mayor, Cr Michael Oliver, is paid $35,750 (plus $3850 in meeting fees), equalling $39,600.

The chairmen of the standing committees are paid $32,375 (plus $3850 in meeting fees), equalling $36,225.

Other councillors receive $21,750 each (plus $3850 in meeting fees), totalling $25,600.

Community board chairmen are paid $7550, and the 13 community board members are paid $3500 each, totalling $22.750.

Elected members can also claim mileage, at 70c per km.

The Waimate District Council's total remuneration pool is $179,100.

Mayor John Coles receives $52,266, the deputy $18,570 and councillors $9788.

The council sets its meeting fee at $160, based on 31 meetings per year (12 council meetings, 15 workshops and four extraordinary meetings).

Waimate's mileage rate is 56c per km.

The Mackenzie District Council's remuneration pool totals $159.813.

Mayor John O'Neill is paid $46,617, and the six councillors each receive $14,263.

The three community board chairmen each receive $3683, and community board members $1841.

Mackenzie does not pay any meeting fees, and apart from a telephone allowance of $30 per fortnight paid to the mayor, the only allowance on offer is 70 cents per kilometre for mileage.

The South Canterbury District Health Board's annual report for the 2006/07 year shows the cost of board members meeting topped $200,000.

Board members received $202,873 for the 10 meetings held during the year. The highest paid was chairman Joe Butterfield, who received $31,332 for attending nine meetings, followed by deputy chair Neil Anderson, who was paid $20,917.

Fifteen health board committee members were paid a total of $12,000 over the year. Just one payment topped $1000 – a payment of $1250.
