An Oamaru man has been taken to hospital with serious head injuries following an incident involving a fishing line gun.

A St John spokesman confirmed a 62-year-old man was taken to Dunedin Hospital's intensive care unit with serious injuries on Tuesday night, following an incident involving an air-powered fishing line gun at Cape Wanbrow, Oamaru, at 7.30pm.

It is understood the man was shot in the head with the fishing gun after it malfunctioned.

The man was taken to Oamaru Hospital and later airlifted to Dunedin Hospital by an Otago Rescue Helicopter with St John paramedics on board.

Fire communications shift manager Brent Dunn said Oamaru fire crews attended the incident on Beach Rd on Tuesday at 7.55pm, but had no further details.

Several police units also attended the scene. Police inquiries are continuing.
