Part of Seadown Rd was blocked off in Timaru last night while fire crews battled a large warehouse blaze.

At least five fire engines along with police attended the blaze at engineering firm Andar about 9.40pm.

Police blocked off Seadown Rd, from Hilton Highway to Treneglos St, in Washdyke.

Last night Timaru Fire Brigade station officer Trevor Karton said by the time crews arrived on the scene the building had become "totally smoke logged".

"We've made entry with breathing apparatus. Crews found the fire and extinguished it and (are) making sure it doesn't spread."

There were no flames visible from the road, but smoke was billowing from the east end of the warehouse.

Dozens of people had flocked to the scene to watch the events unfold.

It is not yet known what caused the blaze or what the extent of damage was.
