At least one person was killed when a 4WD and a truck and trailer unit crashed on SH1 south of Pareora this afternoon.

Police and firefighters remained on the scene of the crash, near the intersection with Woolshed Valley Rd, at 4.30pm.

One person, reportedly the driver, remained inside the 4WD, and officials had stretched a tarpaulin over the vehicle.

At least one passenger and the driver of the truck unit had been transported to hospital by ambulance, police at the scene said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the crash, and the driver of the 4WD had not yet been identified.

The truck unit had come to rest against a power pole and caught fire, with one side of the trailer gone. The blaze had been extinguished.

Police said SH1 would likely remain closed for hours while a serious crash investigation team travelled down from Christchurch.

Traffic was being detoured via Woolshed Valley and Springbank roads.
