Winds down Fairlie power lines
LATEST: Fairlie customers who were without power this morning should expect to be back online this afternoon, Alpine Energy CAO Andrew Tombs says.
About 900 customers, including the whole of Fairlie township, lost electricity about 8.30am after gales blew through the area. The main line between Fairlie and Albury tripped, though it was not entirely clear why the trip occurred, Mr Tombs said.
''The only cause we could see was some vegetation debris that had flown through the lines, and there was plastic hay bale wrap around some of the lines, as well,'' he said.
Most customers had their electricity restored by 12.30pm and all should be back online this afternoon, he said.
Police in the Mackenzie Country reported high winds around Tekapo and Twizel, but not to the level of the gales that overturned trucks and campervans last month.
No power outages were reported in those areas.
The public was reminded to treat all power lines as live, at all times. Outage information can be reported to Alpine Energy at 0800 66 11 77.
