The man who claimed responsibility for tagging the Hydro Grand Hotel on The Bay Hill this week will receive a precharge warning, Timaru police said.
The structure was painted with graffiti - including the phrase "The Wite Eleephant" - early on Tuesday.
A video uploaded to YouTube showed Timaru resident Ron Bishop outside the empty building.
In the video he talked about holding a working bee to paint the hotel which he had renamed "The White Elephant Hotel".
Property owner Allan Booth had indicated he wanted police to charge those responsible for the damage, Constable Marcus Dominey said. Mr Booth was "satisfied" with the offender receiving a precharge warning.
The graffiti was painted over on Tuesday night.
