Walkway succumbs to high seas
Damage to the Otipua Beach walkway caused by high seas is being monitored as some of the walkway disappears.
The Timaru District Council is aware of the situation but is yet to make a decision on what to do next.
Parks and recreation manager Bill Steans said one option was to build the walkway, south of the Caledonian Grounds, further inland.
Mr Steans said the past 12 months had seen really high seas impact on the area.
"There is still access through the walkway but we are monitoring it.
"Maybe in the future we will move it inland if we have to."
Mr Steans said the walkway was built on sand, so it had little to secure it.
"A week ago there were logs on the walkway and they have since disappeared, with the high seas taking them.
"You can't beat nature when it wants to exert its power."
Mr Steans said rock wall protection had been considered but it would be very expensive and would also require resource consent. "We are just waiting to see what the water is going to do."
