South Canterbury rugby players accused of rape
TIMARU HERALD STAFF REPORTER
Whanganui police are investigating allegations that members of a South Canterbury sports team were involved in the rape of a young woman at a hotel.
The New Zealand Herald website reports that the Whanganui CIB is investigating a rape claim at the Kingsgate Hotel.
Police said the allegations have been made against men from a travelling sports team. The Wanganui Chronicle understands it involves the South Canterbury Heartland team.
South Canterbury rugby coach Chester Scott said he knew nothing about an alleged rape of a young woman in Whanganui on Sunday morning.
''It is news to me but I intend to find out what is going on.''
Mr Scott confirmed his team stayed at the hotel in question.
Whanganui Detective Senior Sergeant Neil Forlong said the police were in the very early stages of their investigation. Police were not prepared to release any further details at this time.
