Waimate still without power
Some customers could be cut off until FridayAL WILLIAMS
LATEST: About 200 households in the Waimate district look likely to spend a second night without power as contractors struggle to get the area switched on.
Some customers could still be cut off on Friday, Alpine Energy says.
Chief executive Andrew Tombs said most of Waimate was still without power this afternoon.
Most shops in the main street remained closed and pupils at Waimate Main School were told to stay home today.
Mr Tombs said the main line would not be restored today but contractors were hopeful of getting a secondary line on Timaru Rd up and running. He asked consumers to be conservative with power usage.
Meanwhile, the South Canterbury Rural Support Trust is appealing to people to contact them or Federated Farmers if they know of anyone who needs assistance.
Secretary Jenny Morris said there could be power outages for some time and asked people to check on neighbours, family and friends. A help line was available on 0800 787 254.
