Hydroslide headed to Picton
Century Pool landmark removed this weekEMMA BAILEY
The Century Pool hydroslide has started its journey to the Picton foreshore after it was dismantled completely this week and removed.
It was sold for $10,000 to the former kingpin of the Christchurch sex industry, Terry Rex Brown.
The hydroslide was a Timaru community project and opened in December 1998 at a cost of $275,000.
The Timaru District Council had failed to find a home for the 79-metre fibreglass slide, despite offering it to other councils after Century Pool closed nearly a year ago. Mr Brown was the successful bidder for the slide.
Mr Brown moved to Waikawa, near Picton, three years ago after the earthquakes and wants to bring the seaside town back to life. His parents' family trust was paying for it all and would spend about $200,000 on family entertainment to make Picton a destination.
It is understood to be the first hydroslide in New Zealand that will go into the sea.
