BREAKING NEWS: An Oamaru teenager who was jailed for life for murder in 2011 has had his conviction quashed by the Appeal Court and a retrial ordered.
Daniel Ethan Smith, then 17, was convicted in the High Court at Timaru of the murder of 16-year-old William Lewis, a former Opihi College student, in Oamaru on April 1, 2010. Justice John Fogarty imposed a mandatory life sentence, with a minimum non-parole period of 10 years.
In a decision released yesterday, following a September 16 hearing, the Appeal Court also ruled that the issue of bail would be dealt with by the High Court. All other information relating to the appeal was suppressed.
