Car collides with 4WD pulling horse floatMEGAN MILLER
A 33-year-old Christchurch man was flown to Christchurch Hospital after the sedan he was driving collided with a 4WD pulling a horse float north of Winchester this morning.
The crash occurred about 9.30am near the intersection of State Highway 1 and Beeby Rd. The sedan, travelling south, apparently drifted across the centre line and into the path of the northbound 4WD and horse float, Temuka police Constable Richard Pattie said.
Both vehicles sustained heavy damage and the horse float overturned.
The driver of the sedan, who was alone in the car, suffered leg injuries and was flown to hospital by rescue helicopter. He was conscious at the scene, Mr Pattie said.
The driver and sole occupant of the 4WD, a Timaru man, age unknown, was able to climb out of his vehicle through a window. He suffered a minor injury and was taken to Timaru Hospital by ambulance.
One horse was inside the horse float when the crash occurred. It was freed and walked to a neighbouring property under its own power, where it was later picked up by another vehicle, Mr Pattie said.
A diversion was in place around the crash site, but police expected the scene to be cleared by early afternoon.
It was not yet known why the sedan driver crossed the centre line.
