Strong nor'west winds have sent the temperature soaring in Timaru today.
Online data from the weather station at Richard Pearse Airport put the temperature at 31deg C at 4pm.
Meanwhile gusting winds are sweeping through inland Canterbury.
Astro Cafe general manager Margaret Munro said that winds were reaching 90km this afternoon at Mt John near Tekapo, and if they reached 100km they might close access to the mountain.
''It can be dangerous for tourists driving up this way. It's not pleasant standing, and it's difficult to catch your breath. It's not unusual to have high winds at this time of year,'' she said.
Metservice has warned that unusually high gusts may reach 120 to 140km in some areas tomorrow.
Timaru District Council road safety co-ordinator Daniel Naude is urging motorists to take precaution while driving in windy conditions.
''Motorists need to drive more slowly in strong winds. They'll need to make sure that tyres are pumped up correctly, and if the winds are very high I wouldn't recommend driving.''
Mr Naude said high vehicles, notably campervans, could be particularly unstable in these conditions.
