Train clips car at Oamaru crossing
The occupants of a vehicle hit by a freight train on Lower Thames St in Oamaru this morning have escaped without injury.
The collision occurred just before 9am when the car, travelling south, crept onto the tracks into the path of the east-bound train, which was travelling at around 40kmh.
An ambulance was in attendance at the scene; however, both the driver of the vehicle and the sole passenger, both males, were uninjured and were not taken to hospital.
Oamaru Police Sergeant Wayne Brew said both the warning lights and bells at the crossing were working at the time of the accident.
He said it was too early to determine if any charges would be laid and the investigation was ongoing.
