This week's profile is on singer-song writer Jaz Paterson of Geraldine. Jaz will be performing at the Waimate Strawberry Fare on December 14.
Favourite sports team?
I don't have a favorite sports team but my favourite sportswoman is Pelatia Schwartfeger (plays for Mainland Pride in the National Women's Football competition).
What charity would you give money to?
Childfund, Tearfund, Stop the Traffik.
Are you a night owl or a lark?
Definitely a night owl! I spend the whole day sleepy and wake up properly around about the time I should be going to bed. I actually have dance parties by myself in my room when my family's asleep.
Are you a dog or cat person?
I'm a dog person. I have a dog called Poppy. I prefer dogs to cats because dogs are so forgiving whereas cats tend to be more haughty.
Most annoying celebrity and why?
Paris Hilton because she fake tans too much, isn't particularly talented and hasn't learned to behave properly.
What are your thoughts on reality TV?
I think it's very entertaining and a ton of fun to watch, I love X Factor and NZ's Next Top Model. However, I've heard stories about how contestants in the shows are sometimes exploited, overworked and don't have their opinions respected by the show's producers, and I don't think that side of the industry is cool.
What is your occupation?
I am a part-time preschool teacher and a part-time singer-song writer.
What would you be doing if you weren't doing this?
In the middle of year 13 exams!
Best advice you ever got?
I think the best piece of advice I've ever got is summed up by a lyric in an Awolnation song, "Never let your fear decide your fate". Also something my Dad told me is to not let myself get too affected by what other people think of me, which is really helpful to remember (I'm not great at taking negative reviews).
Favourite other country?
America or France
Do you have any hobbies?
Walking, reading, listening to music and baking.
What is your favourite South Canterbury restaurant?
I know it's not really a restaurant ... but I love Verde in Geraldine. It has the cutest flower garden and an awesome relaxed atmosphere.
What do you love about the region?
I love the beauty of South Canterbury; there are so many awesome places to explore and go for a walk in.
What was your first job?
Being a checkout chick at Supervalue Geraldine.
What's the one single thing you'd really like to have an answer to?
Why can't we have world peace? It would be really cool if everyone quit fighting and resolved their differences.
What were you like at high school?
I was pretty shy and was a bit of a rebel when it came to wearing my uniform properly, plus I would wear extra earrings. I was pretty middle-of-the-road academically.
If you could live in any time in history, when would it be?
The Pride and Prejudice Jane Austen time period. I've been to the Oamaru Heritage Festival where you wear Victorian period clothes and go to dances and balls for a weekend. I love so much about that time (except how restrictive the dresses are).
What thing, besides family photos and pets and people, would you save if your house were on fire?
My guitar, song-writing books and my laptop.
Favourite line of Shakespeare?
"All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts."
