Fire crews battle port blaze
Fire started in pile of rubbishRHONDA MARKBY
The fire in a warehouse at the Port of Timaru is now under control although still smouldering.
It is understood the interior of the brick building owned by the port company is extensively damaged.
The fire started in a pile of rubbish inside the Fraser St building, according to Timaru fire safety officer Kevin Collins.
The alarm was raised about 11.20am. At the height of the incident five fire appliances were on the scene and off-duty firefighters had been called in to assist.
A firewall in the building had protected the section of the building occupied by RSL Landscape Construction. Staff member Isaac Powell said staff were told to leave the building as smoke was seen coming from the other end of the building.
At this stage it is unknown whether anyone was in the building when the fire broke out.
